Back at it again . . .

Last Thursday started our second photography class. This is an intermediate class with some people in it who have taken it several times. Plus, I talked a friend from high school, who I haven't seen in a very long time, to take the class with us. (Well, I didn't have to do too much talking, pretty much told him about it and he was all for it) Check out his awesome work too. The only blog link I have on this blog - John Flowers Photography. Anyway, it is going to be a great class. Although I must say that I am definitely a little intimidated by the abilities the other photogs have. I just remind myself that I am still in the beginning stages of learning. I also remind myself that I have very little time to actually get out of the house to take my photos. Which is some times a frustration for me. I basically have to get "the picture" in the time I have alloted for myself. I typically don't have time to go back and reshoot if I don't get it the first time. (Side note, we have one project per week to complete - which for a mom with two little ones isn't much time. Probably not much time for others with jobs either, I don't want to come across like I'm the only one who struggles with this) Anyway, this weeks assignment was to shoot "The Doors", which is art work near Fashion Square, not the band (which would be way cool). One evening Cody and I snuck away while the boys were with the G-parents and here are some of the pictures I took.

I think you doing a great job! I know I've said this before, but you have a very good eye for composition with the highlights, shadows and angles in your photographs. I know how hard it is to find the time to shoot and that plays a huge role in how I feel about the photos I've taken and how much better they could have been. The photos you've posted of the doors are very creative and interesting. You mother and sister also have a good eye for interesting shots too. I really liked your mother's Desert Botanical Garden shot. It was probably my favorite photo last week. Anyway on to the photos:

1. Good exposure, keeping details in both highlights and shadows. Good depth of field as well. It may look a little soft on the bottom, but from my experience with the D70 it's probably due to the lens or sensor and a little sharpening in photoshop really brings the detail you've captured out. The softness is something that is hard to get rid of with the D70.

2. I really like this shot, one of my favorites I think. The highlights are exposed right and you've still managed to maintain the shadow detail as well. Great composition and very interesting textures. I would really like to see this in B&W because I think it would look really good!!!

3. Good composition, and lighting. Maybe a little more depth of field to see some more detail in the background. You probably used a smaller f-stop with reduced the detail in the background. I don't necessarily mind the top being blurred out, but I just wish the sharpness was a little further up to the halfway mark. I wouldn't worry though because I had a lot of my shots do the same thing so I couldn't use them.

4. I like this shot as well with the lighting and subject matter. Good detail on the handle and again good exposure.

P.S. You've got some really great portrait shots on your other blog.
